Retaining Walls & Concrete Masonry
Strong, attractive retaining walls and masonry structures built to last.

Why Retaining Walls Matter
Retaining walls serve both practical and aesthetic purposes. If your property has slopes or elevation changes, a well-built retaining wall prevents soil erosion, creates usable flat spaces, and protects structures from shifting earth. At the same time, an attractive retaining wall enhances your landscaping and adds visual interest to your property.
We have been building retaining walls and concrete masonry structures in Cedar Hill, TX since 2024. Our Texas climate and soil conditions put specific demands on retaining walls. Clay soil expands when wet, putting pressure on walls. Heavy rains can cause erosion if drainage is not handled properly. We design and build walls that address these local conditions and stand up to years of weather and pressure.
Types of Retaining Walls and Masonry
Different situations call for different retaining wall solutions:
- Poured concrete walls - Solid, monolithic walls for larger heights and heavy loads
- Concrete block (CMU) walls - Versatile and economical, can be filled with concrete for strength
- Decorative block walls - Attractive modular blocks designed specifically for retaining walls
- Brick veneer over concrete - Classic appearance with structural concrete backing
- Stone-faced walls - Natural stone or manufactured stone over concrete or block structure
Engineering and Design Requirements
Retaining walls are structural elements that require proper engineering. Walls over 4 feet tall typically need engineered designs and building permits. Even shorter walls benefit from good design to ensure they handle soil pressure and drainage correctly. We can provide engineered designs or work from plans you already have.
Key design factors include wall height and the amount of soil it retains, soil type and how much pressure it exerts, groundwater and surface water drainage, loads from buildings, driveways, or slopes above the wall, and frost depth and local building codes. Getting these factors right prevents wall failure, which is expensive and sometimes dangerous.
Proper Foundation and Construction
A retaining wall is only as good as its foundation. We excavate below frost depth and pour a solid concrete footing that extends below and behind the wall base. This footing must be level and properly sized to support the wall and resist tipping or sliding. For taller walls, we tie the wall to the footing with rebar.
As we build the wall, we install drainage systems behind it. This typically includes gravel backfill for drainage, perforated drain pipe at the base to carry water away, and weep holes through the wall to prevent water pressure buildup. Water pressure is one of the biggest threats to retaining walls, so we take drainage seriously.
Decorative Options and Finishes
Your retaining wall does not have to look like a plain concrete barrier. We offer numerous options to create attractive results. Decorative concrete blocks come in various colors and textures that resemble natural stone. Stone veneer or brick facing adds classic appeal. Stucco or textured finishes can be applied to poured concrete walls. And caps or coping stones finish the top with a polished look.
We can also incorporate design elements like terraced walls creating multiple levels, curves or angles instead of straight lines, integrated planters or seating areas, and lighting built into or mounted on the wall. These features transform a purely functional structure into an attractive landscape element.
Other Concrete Masonry Projects
Beyond retaining walls, we handle various concrete masonry applications. Block privacy walls and fences provide security and screening. Outdoor kitchen structures and built-in BBQ surrounds create entertainment spaces. Raised planter beds and garden walls organize landscaping. And column or pillar construction for gates, mailboxes, or decorative purposes adds architectural interest.
These structures combine the durability of concrete with the versatility of masonry construction. They require minimal maintenance, resist weather and pests, and last for decades. Whether you need functional retaining walls or decorative masonry features, we bring the expertise to build structures that perform well and look great.
Maintenance and Longevity
Properly built retaining walls and masonry structures need very little maintenance. Occasionally check that drainage systems are working and not clogged with debris. Watch for any cracks or movement that might indicate problems. Keep vegetation from growing too close to walls where roots might cause damage. That is about all it takes.
With good construction and minimal maintenance, concrete retaining walls easily last 50-100 years. Block walls have similar longevity. Compare this to timber retaining walls that might rot after 10-20 years, and you can see why concrete and masonry make sense for permanent landscape structures. The higher upfront cost pays off through decades of reliable performance without replacement or major repairs.
